7 Signs Your Gut is Asking for Help

7 Signs Your Gut is Asking for Help

Your gut plays a central role in your overall health, influencing everything from your energy levels to your mental clarity. But when it’s struggling, the signs aren’t always obvious.

Symptoms like bloating or fatigue might feel like part of daily life, but they’re often your gut’s way of waving a red flag and asking for help. Ignoring these signals can lead to bigger issues, but tuning in and addressing them can transform your health and well-being.

Let’s explore the 7 key signs your gut might be in trouble, what they mean, and what you can do about them.

1. Persistent bloating

That feeling of fullness or tightness in your abdomen after meals isn’t something you have to put up with.

  • What it means: Bloating often signals an imbalance in your gut bacteria, known as dysbiosis, or difficulty digesting certain foods.
  • What to do: Start a food and symptom diary to identify triggers, and include more fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir to support gut health.

2. Frequent fatigue

If you’re waking up tired or hitting an energy slump mid-afternoon, your gut could be to blame.

  • What it means: An unhealthy gut can struggle to absorb nutrients properly, leaving your body lacking the fuel it needs.
  • What to do: Focus on gut-nourishing meals with lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. Consider supplementing with probiotics to restore balance.

3. Irregular bowel movements

Constipation, diarrhoea, or a mix of both are clear indicators your gut isn’t happy.

  • What it means: These symptoms can stem from inflammation, food intolerances, or imbalances in your gut microbiome.
  • What to do: Stay hydrated, include fibre-rich foods like oats and cooked vegetables, and avoid overly processed meals that can irritate your gut.

4. Brain fog and poor focus

Struggling to stay sharp or focus on tasks? Your gut might have something to say about it.

  • What it means: The gut-brain connection is real. Inflammation in your gut can impact your mental clarity and even your mood.
  • What to do: Incorporate omega-3 rich foods like salmon or walnuts to support brain and gut health, and practise stress-reducing techniques like meditation.

5. Skin flare-ups

Acne, eczema, or unexplained rashes could be tied to what’s happening in your gut.

  • What it means: Your gut and skin share a close connection, and inflammation in your digestive system can manifest on your skin.
  • What to do: Cut back on inflammatory foods like refined sugars and incorporate anti-inflammatory options like turmeric and leafy greens.

6. Increased sugar cravings

Craving sweets more than usual? Your gut bacteria might be driving those impulses.

  • What it means: An imbalanced microbiome can cause sugar-loving bacteria to dominate, creating intense cravings.
  • What to do: Gradually reduce sugar intake and add more prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and bananas to nourish beneficial bacteria.

7. Low mood or heightened anxiety

Your mental health and gut health are deeply connected. If you’re feeling low or more anxious than usual, your gut could be a factor.

  • What it means: Around 90% of serotonin (the “happy hormone”) is produced in the gut. When your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can disrupt this process.
  • What to do: Include gut-healing foods like bone broth and practise mindful eating to help regulate digestion and mood.

What To Do If These Signs Resonate With You
