Craig’s IBD Story
Craig’s IBD Story

So my story with Colitis has been a long one. It all started on a guys holiday where I first noticed the symptoms of going to the toilet more than normal. But I just blamed that on food and alcohol.

But when I got home I noticed blood in the toilet. Being 18 at the time stupidly I didn’t take it that seriously… But fortunately my mum did. After being told by numerous GP’s it was ibs I finally got sent to a specialist who after a colonoscopy I was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis.

My first few years were pretty good as I only took steroids and was in remission for a good few years (hence me not taking it seriously) I also never spoke about it or acted like I had it…. Typical guy. It’s only I’d say it’s only the last few years I’ve opened up about it. After a recent hospital stay for it after a massive flare I decided I couldn’t do all this alone. The toll it was taking on my mental health and still does to this day sometimes was putting me in some very dark places.

So I decided to start my @driventofightuk Instagram page while in hospital. I had the idea of putting my passion of cars into helping try and raise awareness for a relatively still unknown disease. And the response has been huge from fellow people with it and car companies showing support!

I’ve been through numerous drugs and biologics but currently getting by with Octasa and a stelara injection every 8 weeks. I do think this is my last chance really before surgery which I’m not opposed to as it will obviously save my life.

I hid this disease for so long. And my biggest advice especially to another guy is to speak to people that actually have it. I know it’s hard at first, but it’s honestly the best thing I’ve done as I know longer feel I’m fighting something alone.
