I've Just Been Diagnosed With IBD and I Don't Know What To Do

I've Just Been Diagnosed with Crohn's Disease / Ulcerative Colitis and I Don't Know What to Do

Being diagnosed with Crohn's disease can feel overwhelming and isolating. Trust me, I understand. When you're handed a diagnosis like this, it's natural to feel a mix of confusion, fear, and uncertainty. But take a deep breath. You're not alone, and there are plenty of ways to manage this condition and live a fulfilling life. Here's a guide to help you navigate through the initial stages and beyond.

Understanding Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of your digestive tract. This can lead to various symptoms, including abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. The inflammation caused by Crohn's can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people. It's a chronic condition, meaning it lasts a lifetime, but with the right strategies, you can manage it effectively.

Initial Steps After Diagnosis

  1. Educate yourself and start to understand the condition - understanding your condition is the first step towards managing it. Knowing what you're dealing with can help you feel more in control.
  2. Build your healthcare team by creating a supportive network around you to address all areas of your condition, from nutrition to physical activity, to mindset and behaviour change.
  3. Start a symptom diary by keeping a record of your symptoms, diet, stress levels, and other factors can help you and your support network identify triggers and patterns. This can be incredibly useful for tailoring your treatment plan (which is what the first step is within my Mindful Gut Healing Method programme).

Managing Crohn's Disease

Managing Crohn's involves a combination of diet, and lifestyle changes. Here are some strategies to help you get started:

Supplements: anti-inflammatory supplements, immunosuppressants, prebiotics and different herbs can be used to control inflammation and manage symptoms. Common supplements for Crohn's include probiotics, fish oil, and vitamin D but there are SO many amazing products out there that target different areas of the body for long term results.

Diet and Nutrition: While there's no one-size-fits-all diet for Crohn's, some general tips can help:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Small, frequent meals: Eating smaller, more frequent meals can be easier on your digestive system.
  • Avoid trigger foods: Common triggers include dairy, spicy foods, alcohol, and high fibre foods. Keep a food diary to identify your specific triggers.
  • Balanced diet: Focus on a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If certain foods cause issues, work with a me to find suitable alternatives.

Stress management: Stress can exacerbate symptoms, so finding ways to manage stress is crucial:

  • Mindfulness and meditation... Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
  • Exercise: Regular, moderate exercise can improve your mood and help manage stress. Activities like walking, yoga, or swimming are gentle on your body and beneficial for your mental health.
  • Mindset and behaviour change is so important and something we pride ourselves on at KLK. We are all about providing you with coping strategies and emotional support.

Practical Tips for Daily Life

  1. Plan ahead: Whether it's planning meals, knowing the location of restrooms when you're out, making if-then plans or carrying emergency supplies, a little preparation can go a long way.
  2. Stay informed: Keep up with the latest research and treatments for Crohn's disease. Being informed can empower you and help you make better decisions about your health.
  3. Join a support group: Connecting with others who have Crohn's can provide emotional support and practical advice. Look for local support groups or online communities. I have a FREE WhatsApp support group here: CLICK HERE TO JOIN
